i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now 6:00. >>> some breaking news in san francisco. flames are shooting out of a popular restaurant in the city's west portal neighborhood and the muni tunnel is now being shut down. we have team coverage with elizabeth in traffic. >> in traffic. but first we are going right to cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran on the scene with the very latest. cate what can you tell us. >> reporter: i can tell you that the fire started in the squat and gobble popular restaurant here in san francisco. crews are busy battling flames. there's heavy smoke in the air. this restaurant is completely gutted. it is a complete loss for the building here. i can see already dozens of firefighters here on scene trying to tackle this fire. they have been at it for quite a while. crews say that they got the call right at around 4:00, 4:14 this morning and the fire quickly grew to three alarms. flames were shooting up as high as 10 to 20 feet. heavy smoke in the area and now they have set up a perimeter here along west portal. they have shut down as i was talking about
in san francisco. it started at the back of the building at the bay view hunters point building. a rear bedroom was damaged. everyone got out safely and they kept the flames from spreading to adjacent homes. it's been more than 24 hours since a pilot and his plan went missing after taking off from half-moon bay. the single engine plane left around 6 in the morning yesterday. the pilot heading down to tucson arizona but never made it. the plane is similar to this one here with a tail number n72ah. it is registered to man bay the name of of andrew haden out of florida. his wife reported him missing after the plane didn't make a fuel stop in apple valley. >>> four separate shootings in oakland in one afternoon and evening. six people are injured. the most serious incident happened just before 10 last night in east oakland. one victim has critical injuries. earlier two other people were shot in east oakland. in addition one person was wounded near lake merritt and they are all in stable condition. >>> a court appointed monitor has harsh words saying department leaders are backsliding on ref

>> kron 4 news starts now with a developing story. let it right to san francisco a scene of a recent fire. this particular one occurred in the west portal avenue at exactly 9 west portal avenue adjacent to the west portal station. at cafe caught on fire after 5:00 a.m. let's get to the scene we have our kron 4 reporter giving us the latest. have the flames died down?. >> the flames have stopped bursting through which they have been doing the last half-hour. this is a fire that officials say is a difficult fire to fight because of the location of the building. 110 firefighters on seen it is up to a fourth alarm fire. you can see the ladders are spraying water on top of the building. lots of crews on seen as you can the slot and gobble cafe in the background the west portal muni station. no trains are coming through. there is nowhere to go one of the muni trains had to pull over and let 75 to 100 people off. these firefighters are continuing to be on the scene to control the fire. it is difficult because it is on the corner. you can see the flames behind the trees again pop
by an orange safety vest. tonight police in san francisco are warning people of an alarming scam. they say burglars are posing as utility workers to get inside homes. the suspects claim to be water department employees who want to check water faucets or test water for possible contamination. when the residents are distracted the suspect rips them off. >>> now to an nbc bay area follow up. the postal service is offering a substantial reward to help catch thieves that are stealing mail in the south bay. it's a story we first uncovered and broke last week. it seems someone has been breaking into community mail boxes in one san jose neighborhood. this is how it works. the vandals break the back panels of the boxes then steal all the mail. the u.s. postal inspector's office is offering a $10,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the mail stealers. the office sent armed officers into rose avenue and nancy lane after a report last week on the thefts. >> any time somebody attacks a mail box like that, it is a federal crime. the crime has been committed. it's serious. >> you heard it. federal
